Form to Light to Colour: Plein Air Landscape Painting
Painting Workshop - June 25 - July 2, 2011 with Clive Pates
This course will feature plein-air painting demonstrations that will explore the development of a painting over a number of sessions. The instruction will explore compositional relationships within the landscape, using line and tone to establish the underlying foundation of a painting as the basis for considered use of colour.
The course will progress in terms of the individual needs of each student. “I do not assert painting rules too dogmatically, but place myself within the uncertainties and expectations of every student and give a way forward for each level of experience.”
This course will run concurrently with Virginia Pates’ Clay workshop, and will include day trips, dinners and wine tastings. A cooking course is available for non-participating partners.

Clive Pates describes himself as a gesturalist: representing his subject with brush and knife work, sculpturally describing the space created between the artist, the landscape and the picture surface. Adamantly unsentimental about the subjects for his paintings, Pates prefers to be described as an “abstract painter with an ongoing fling for realism.”
Pates’ work has been awarded numerous commendations, including a British Fulbright Scholarship, three Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grants and two Andy Warhol Foundation Grants. He has taught at the Queens Road School of Art in Bristol, England, the Verrocchio Arts Centre in Casole d’Elsa, Tuscany, and the Sedona, Arizona, campus of Yavapai College. www.clivepates.com
